JEE Main is India's largest engineering entrance exam, and the percentile-based ranking system confuses many students. What does 95 percentile mean? What rank is it? Which college can you get? This guide answers all of these clearly, with tables covering NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs for AP & TS students.
What is Percentile Score? (Not the Same as Percentage!)
Percentile score is not your marks as a percentage. It's your position relative to other students who appeared in the same session:
Percentile = (Number of students who scored equal to or less than you รท Total students in session) ร 100
Example: If 10 lakh students appeared and 9 lakh scored less than or equal to you, your percentile = 90.
This is why two different JEE Main sessions can have different percentile-to-marks mappings โ it depends entirely on how other students in that session performed. This is the normalisation that NTA does across multiple shifts.
How NTA Handles Multiple Sessions
JEE Main 2025 has two sessions (January and April). NTA uses a specific method to produce your final percentile:
- Your percentile is calculated separately for each session you appear in
- If you appear in both sessions, your best percentile is used for ranking
- The combined merit list uses all session attempts across all students โ so your January session percentile is compared against all January participants, not April
Appearing in both sessions almost always improves your rank, even if your second attempt feels similar.
JEE Main Percentile vs Expected Rank Table (2025 Estimate)
| Percentile Score | Approx AIR (All India Rank) | NIT Option Available? |
|---|---|---|
| 99.9+ | < 1,000 | NIT Trichy, Warangal CSE |
| 99.5โ99.9 | 1,000โ5,000 | Top NITs โ ECE/Mech |
| 99.0โ99.5 | 5,000โ10,000 | Good NITs โ various branches |
| 98.0โ99.0 | 10,000โ20,000 | NITs (lower branches), IIITs |
| 97.0โ98.0 | 20,000โ35,000 | IIITs, GFTIs |
| 95.0โ97.0 | 35,000โ60,000 | GFTIs, some IIITs |
| 90.0โ95.0 | 60,000โ1,20,000 | GFTIs only, private colleges |
| Below 90 | 1,20,000+ | Private engineering colleges |
๐ Ranks shift significantly between January and April sessions. April typically sees more competition, slightly pushing ranks down. Use these as estimates for January 2025 session results.
NITs in AP & TS โ Cutoff Ranks for 2025
| NIT | Branch | OC Rank (Approx Open Category) | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| NIT Warangal | CSE | 2,000โ4,000 | Telangana |
| NIT Warangal | ECE | 4,000โ7,000 | Telangana |
| NIT Andhra Pradesh | CSE | 8,000โ14,000 | Tadepalligudem, AP |
| NIT Andhra Pradesh | ECE | 14,000โ22,000 | Tadepalligudem, AP |
| IIIT Hyderabad | CSE | 500โ1,500 | Hyderabad, TS |
| IIIT Design & Manufacturing, Kurnool | CSE | 25,000โ40,000 | Kurnool, AP |
Home State Quota Benefit for AP & TS Students
50% of NIT seats in each state are reserved for students who domicile in that state ("Home State Quota"). This means:
- AP students get 50% of NIT Andhra Pradesh seats at much lower cutoff ranks
- TS students get 50% of NIT Warangal seats at lower cutoff ranks
- Other NIT seats (non-home state) are filled from all-India merit
Home state quota for NIT AP (AP students): CSE cutoff rank can be 20,000โ30,000 vs 8,000โ14,000 for all-India open seats. This is a massive advantage โ check your home state carefully during JoSAA counselling.
Should AP/TS Students Target JEE or EAMCET?
- If your EAMCET rank is below 500: You can get a top government college (AUCE, JNTUH). JEE may not add much unless you target top NITs.
- If your EAMCET rank is 1,000โ5,000: A good JEE percentile (98+) opens NIT Warangal / NIT AP, which are excellent national institutions worth the extra effort.
- If your EAMCET rank is above 10,000: JEE Main with 95+ percentile opens IIIT Kurnool and NIT AP home state seats โ strongly worth pursuing alongside EAMCET prep.
